To study the response of wheat cultivars released for saline conditions and offering appropriate approaches for selecting tolerant varieties, different experiments were conducted for 10 years in Khuzestan, yazd and Golestan provinces under saline conditions with some varieties released for saline and non saline condition and 475 lines. Results showed that there were wide variations among the yield of genotypes especially in the first years of the experiments. Grain yield was more affected by regional weather rather than salt tolerant trait. Grain yield was directly correlated with growth period of the genotypes. Thus, it could be late cultivars inaccurately released as salt tolerant. Yields of salt tolerant cultivars were not significantly different from some cultivars that released for non saline conditions. It could be due to iinaccuracy in salinity treatments imposing, interaction between environment and salt stress and lake of understanding of salinity concepts and also salt sensitive stages of the crop. Based on the findings it is recommended that, by absolute yield comparison of commercial cultivars regionally under saline conditions, “appropriate cultivars for saline conditions” selected instead of “salt tolerant cultivars”.
