Title
Evaluation of drought tolerance in barley cultivars using yield and yield components
Authors
Abstract
This study was carried out in order to evaluation and assessment of tolerant genotypes to drought stress among 14 foreign and 1 Iranian barley cultivars. The experiment was conducted under both normal irrigation and drought stress conditions in a split plot experiment based on randomized complete block design with three replicates in College of Agriculture, Shiraz University during 2012-13. The ANOVA results revealed that drought stress significantly (p < 0.05) reduces spike number per plant, grain number per spike, hundred kernel weight, grain yield, shoot dry weight and harvest index in all studied cultivars, however, the reduction rates were different among the cultivars. Based on Duncan’s multiple range test cultivar 47 had the highest hundred kernel weight, grain yield, shoot dry weight and harvest index in both normal irrigation and drought stress conditions. The Stress Tolerance Index (STI) analysis indicated that the cultivar 47 and 147 were the most and the least drought stress tolerant cultivars, respectively.
