Title
The effect of nutrient solutions on growth and physiological characteristics of the different species of mint
Authors
Abstract
Peppermint is belonging to Mentha genus and Lamiaceae family that having many medicinal properties.
Peppermint essential oil has carminative, anticonvulsant, stimulating, invigorating, and soothing the
stomach, and relieving pain, stomach ulcer properties. In this research an experiment was conducted in 1392
years at the Islamic Azad University of Mianeh. In this study, the effects of both nutrient solution (Hoagland
100%, 50% Hoagland, MS 5 percent, MS 10 percent, MS15%) and Mentha species (Mentha spicata, Mentha
longifolia, Mentha piperata) as a factorial based on completely randomized design with three replications
were studied. Analysis of variance showed that the effect of species on all morphological properties, nutrient
solutions on number of leaves number of branches and number of nodes and the interaction of nutrient
solution and species on number of leaves, number of branches, number of nodes, plant height, and the length
meaning was siginificant. Analysis of variance showed that the effect of species on all physiological
characteristics is significant. Type of nutrient splution was siginificant on leaf fresh weight, dry weight, root
fresh weight and root dry weight. Interaction of nutrient solution and species on leaf fresh weight, dry
weight, root fresh weight, root dry weight, shoot fresh weight and shoot dry weight was significant. As can
be seen in the present study, almost the majority of the studied characteristics, the M. piperita better answer
than Hoagland solution are shown. The results indicate that in between nutrient solutions MS had better than
of Hoagland on M. longifolia. Response of M. spicata against Hoagland solution and MS were different.
