Title
Effect of seed priming on seed germination and seedling growth characteristics of deteriorated
Authors
Abstract
In order to evaluate the effect of priming on germination characteristics in deteriorated seeds of canola, two separate factorial experiments were done in 4 and 20 °C at genetic lab of Yasouj University in 2013. The experimental design was CRD with two factors (including priming treatment and variety) and three replications. Used varieties were includes Talayeh and a local variety which had been stored for 6 years at room conditions. Also, priming compositions were including salicylic acid at two levels (1 and 3 mM), polyethylene glycol at two levels (-4 and -9 bar), distilled water (hydropriming) and non-priming (control). The following traits were evaluated; root length, shoot length and seedling length, germination percentage, germination rate and vigor index. The results showed that among the compositions used in the priming temperature at 4 °C, PEG -4 bar and salicylic acid 1mM had a greater influence on the germination characteristics. However, the response was more limited at 20 °C and in that condition hydroprimed and salicylic acid 1mM treated seeds showed a better performance. In these circumstances it seems that better reaction to lower priming temperature probably arise from controlled absorption of water that would help to repair the damages of seed deterioration. On this basis, one may also interpret the results of osmopriming with PEG.
