Title
Effect of Water Limitation on Some Morphological Traits of Chickpea Cultivars
Authors
Abstract
An experiment was carried out as factorial on the basis of randomized complete block design with three replicates to evaluate the effects of different irrigation treatments (I1, I2, I3 and I4: irrigation after 80, 110, 140 and 170 mm evaporation from class A pan) on some morphological traits of chickpea cultivars (Arman, ILC and Jam from Kabuli type and Pirooz from desi type). The results indicated that irrigation treatments and cultivar had significant effects on plant height and filled pods per plant, but their effects on branches per plant were not significant. The interaction of irrigation × cultivar was only significant for plant height. Although plant height of Arman was higher than other cultivars under I1 and I2 treatments, this cultivar showed greater reduction under I3 and I4 treatments, compared with other cultivars. Mean number of filled pods per plant for I4 was significantly lower than that for other irrigation treatments, but this trait did not differ significantly among I1, I2 and I3. The highest number of filled pods per plant was obtained for ILC, but no significant differences among Arman, ILC and Pirooz and also between Jam and Pirooz were observed. Interaction of Irrigation × cultivar for filled pods per plant was not significant, indicating that ILC was a superior cultivar under both well and limited irrigation conditions.
