Title
IDENTIFICATION OF SSR MARKERS ASSOCIATED WITH
FORAGE YIELD AND QUALITY TRAITS IN KENAF
Authors
Abstract
Genetic studies on kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.), a potential forage crop, is necessary to
improve kenaf varieties for consumption as a ruminant feed. The objective of the present
study was to identify genetic factors associated with kenaf forage yield and quality using SSR
markers.Result on marker-trait association revealed that five SSR primers were associated
with plant height and qualitative forage traits including CP content and ADF. A linkage group
was also constructed with seven SSR markers at different positions in the kenaf genome and
demonstrated that the use of more polymorphic microsatellite markers could be successfully
applied in kenaf breeding for detection of agronomically important QTLs.
